How to read these results
- Built for
Compounding capital over the long term, with hedges that protect it when markets turn.
- Where it excels
Established bull markets. When trends in US equities persist, the trend-following engine does the heavy lifting, and this is where it is built to outperform the S&P 500.
- Where it lags
The turn from bull to bear market, and sharp rotations out of the stocks that have risen most. The trend systems are positioned for the trend that is ending, and the hedges engage once the new one has taken hold.
Most of a drawdown in this phase is open profit being given back. Trend following holds winners until the trend breaks, so the exit always comes after the top. The bigger the gains on the table, the more there is to give back. A deep drawdown after a strong run is the cost of having ridden that run, and I accept it.
- In a bear market
The hedges take over. They limit the damage, so capital is intact when the next trend begins.
- During a drawdown
The rules don't change. Drawdowns are part of the design, not a reason to redesign.

How I measure
Source
All figures come from a live, real-money Interactive Brokers account, not backtests or simulations.
Method
Time-weighted returns remove the effect of deposits and withdrawals. Results are net of commissions and fees.
Benchmark
Switch on the comparison to see the portfolio next to the S&P 500 index (price return, excluding dividends).
How each metric is calculated
- Return since inception
- How much the account has grown since the first day. Time-weighted, so deposits and withdrawals don't count as performance. Net of commissions and fees.
- CAGR
- The average yearly growth rate, compounded. Shown once the record is longer than a year; before that it would extrapolate too little data.
- Annualised volatility
- How much the daily returns swing around their average: the standard deviation of daily returns, annualised with √252 trading days. Higher means a bumpier ride, up and down.
- Max drawdown
- The deepest fall from a previous high to a later low, measured on daily closing values. The worst stretch you would have had to sit through.
- Current drawdown
- How far the account is below its highest daily close today. 0% means it is at a new high.
- Sortino ratio
- Return per unit of downside risk: the average daily return divided by the downside deviation (only losing days count), annualised with √252, risk-free rate 0%. Higher is better. Unlike the Sharpe ratio, it doesn't penalise big up days.
- Beta to S&P 500
- How strongly the portfolio reacts to the market. A beta of 1 means it moved one-for-one with the S&P 500 on average; above 1 more, below 1 less. Calculated from daily returns since inception.
- Correlation to S&P 500
- How consistently the portfolio moves in step with the S&P 500 from day to day, on a scale from −1 to 1. 0 means no relation, 1 means always in step. It says nothing about the size of the moves. Calculated from daily returns since inception.
- Best month
- The highest return in a single calendar month.
- Worst month
- The lowest return in a single calendar month.
- Positive months
- The share of calendar months that ended with a gain. The first month is a partial month, counted from inception.
- Monthly returns
- The time-weighted return for each calendar month. The yearly total compounds the months shown.
